bicycle parts + typography + letterpress

I love it when my favorite things collide in design. Letterpress, bicycle parts and typography.  I don’t know whether to gasp or soon. I do know I want it!

Available for purchase from Studio on Fire. This poster created for the 2011 Artcrank, a poster show for bike folk. Cranks, chains, cables, wheels, handlebars and even a seat.  The word “Godspeed” was chosen for cyclists, as a wish for a safe and prosperous journey. It was plated in photo polymer and printed as a large format 20 x 26 letterpress print in 2 color on 100% cotton Crane Lettra. More info at Beast Pieces. (photos from Beast Pieces, too).

a (design) stamp of approval

Finally, the importance and influence of design recognized by the USPS with a set of stamps celebrating the Pioneers of  American Industrial Design.

Great, aren’t they? They are “forever” stamps, meaning they are the same value as first class postage.

The designers featured are Frederick Hurten Rhead, Walter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Gilbert Rohde, Greta von Nessen, Russel Wright, Henry Dreyfuss, Peter Müller-Munk, Dave Chapman, and Eliot Noyes.

And not to be selfish…but hoping for a set of Inspiring Graphic Designers next.  And after that, we will add Milton Glaser to Mount Rushmore. It could happen!

enjoy the ride, and the coffee

This cup of coffee comes with a little self promotion. We (that would be Tackett+Barbaria, our design studio, in partnership with the City of Davis) just delivered our first set of diner mugs to the UC Davis Bookstore in Downtown Davis. Also available, a six-color t shirt with the same bicycle and clever tagline.

It’s part of doing something new and different. Keep your fingers crossed and hope others like them. If not, you can expect a coffee mug for Christmas (I have 144).

manifesto for happy

This is the Holstee Manifesto Poster. At $25.00, it’s a cheap reminder of what’s important. It is missing the “drink good coffee” line, but it’s letterpress, so those two cancel each other out. Enjoy. Via Internet Therapy.

design for a change

Philadelphia design firm,  The Heads of State, is offering this two color serigraph poster as a charity fundraiser for Oceana. You can buy one here.  One  poster may not change the world, but it’s a fine step towards speaking out and acting, rather than just sighing and complaining. Good stuff.

Thanks to Jessica Hische for the find.

will play for type

TypePong for your iPhone. You know, pong…with type. Don’t blame me if you can’t stop.

Thanks to Swiss Miss for the find.

more posters from anthony burrill

I became a fan of Anthony Burrill’s work with his Work Hard and Be Nice to People poster. More new, nice stuff. (Thanks to Design Crush for the find.)

heart art

Just because. I heart letterpress, and designers who find a different way to tell the same story.

buy:design | what’s the big idea?

I suspect the same conversation happens in every design studio. We drink coffee and someone says something clever (perhaps) and someone else says, “that would be great on a t shirt.” And later in the day, post afternoon latte run, someone designs something cool, and the fourth someone else says (again), “that would be great on a t shirt.” And repeat.

We said it. And we did it. We jumped in and opened a store, What’s The Big Idea, on zazzle.com. We’ve been wanting to do this for years, and when we were working on our New Year’s promo, the time and opportunity created a giant Venn diagram of right-timeness.

We’re not sure where this new path will lead, but we’re hoping there is something good around the corner. For us, it’s about following our curiosity, taking things into our own hands, and creating something new and energizing and even fun (remember that? fun!). This blog started that way, and we’re trusting the process of discovery.

We’ve opened with two lines, 2010|The Year To Get It Done, and live.art.fully. We have a clipboard and stack of folders full of ideas, and we’ll keep making stuff and hoping some of it will resonate with our friends, colleagues and  folks who stumble upon the shop. Heck, we might even use this social marketing thing for something besides announcing how we feel about the weather, the weekend and today’s sandwich.

So if you have a moment, click on over and check out the newest venture. Let us know what you think, and may we all brave the new year and the new decade and make something happen, like we know it can.

buy:design | because who doesn’t want a set of floaty pens?
