automorphosis | pure joy

I have always loved art cars. One day I will have/make one. My glue gun and my collection of girl superhero dolls are just waiting for the right moment. In the meantime we have Automorphosis.

Featuring a perfect poster by Calef Brown:

Plus, access to camera van postcards (c’mon, you know you want to get a closer look).

And of course, a reason to visit Douglas, Arizona (to visit Art Car World).

re:treat | a website vacay designed just for fun

Just a few to enjoy with your mojito, or margarita, or whatever cold and frosty beverage sends summer goodness your way.

Theydrawandcook.com. Delightful recipe renderings from illustrators and designers. (Thanks to Kevin Yee for the find).

Salsa Verde by Geninne Zlatkis.

A Collection A Day by illustrator Lisa Congdon. Boy, does she have some cool stuff. And if she doesn’t, she imagines it.

Truly Amazing Homes. My daughter Kate sent me this one. Check out the awesome treehouses, then let your imagination visit this one (it’s a hotel):

From Swedish firm Tham & Videgard Hansson Arkitekter.

And to guarantee you leave with a smile on your face, I present….the Terrestrial Shrub Rover by Justin Shull.

re:treat | the world cup of stamp design

I’ve been wanting to do a post on the graphic design of the World Cup, but honestly, nothing captured my imagination enough to warrant the attention. Maybe I was just distracted by the cacophony of vuvuzelas.  And then I saw these postage stamps on design:related.

Karen Horton has curated a beautiful collection of stamps from every participating country. Most  are from  1900 through the mid-1930s, with a few from the early 1970s.

Some of my favorites:

love letter for you, street style

Before you start your week, take a moment to wander around this site, and I promise your week will have a little more bounce to it’s step.  A Love Letter For You is a mural project in Philadelphia, painted on the walls facing the Market elevated train. The project encompasses 50 painted walls, done by 40 artists.  Here’s a sampling…but really, pour another cup of coffee and go to the site and enjoy all of it. (See, I gave you three chances, one for each cup of coffee.)

Hand letterpressed by Doug Wilson on vintage maps. Each one is different. From the Keep Calm Gallery. I love type, letterpress, maps, and the concept of the designer (and especially the project manager) as the pathfinder.

Yes, I do need this.

re:treat | vintage candy wrappers

Think of this as my Halloween gift to you.

Some of my favorites from  The Candy Wrapper Museum.

I actually have this one by R. Crumb. Had the good sense to pay $1 for it at the now-defunct-but-never-forgotten Tower Records on Broadway. The candy bar has crumbled (no pun intended), but the package sits on my desk and makes me laugh every day.

From Jason Leibig’s awesome Candy and Snacks Flickr set.

re:treat | that’s my type of cake

A while back my daughter Kate and I tagged teamed on a post about one of our favorite stores in Vancouver, The Regional Assembly of Text. One of our favorite features of this favorite store in our favorite city is their collection of vintage typewriters. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when one of my favorite blogs, Design Sponge, featured a story on The Regional Assembly of Text’s 4th birthday, and this cake.

Which of course, made me go all google-vintage cakey, to see what else had been created by others….
